The idea was so well received that in September 1988, Zayre sold its name-brand chain to a competing bargain department store called Ames. Zayre announced a restructuring strategy for the business in December and changed its name to “TJX Companies, Incorporated.” In 1995, TJX bought Marshalls. The AJ Wright retail chain debuted in the fall of 1998, thanks to T.J. Maxx. It was discontinued in January 2007. TJX introduced an e-commerce website in March 2009.

As an alternative to sibling stores, several T.J. Maxx locations are now opening next to Home Goods stores. Each of them offers goods that are complementary to one another and has price ranges that are fairly equivalent.
