Marshall and colleagues devised a strategy to address the double post-war phenomenon of the booming economy and suburban development advantageously. They collaborated to build a self-service departmental store in Beverly, Massachusetts, offering clothing and household goods at enticingly low costs. Additional floor space was “sublet” to different vendors to give clients footwear, hardware, and athletic items, but the distinct ownership of those areas was invisible to the shopper. The “A & M Luncheonette,” another sublet of floor area in the main business, also contained a soda fountain/grill (for Alice & Mickey Masters, the proprietors). The concept was a smashing hit. Marshalls had grown to become the USA’s leading off-price retail chain a decade later.

Marshalls now operates over 1,000 American stores, including larger store chains known as Marshalls Mega Store, in 42 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
